Welcome to Special 2 Part Release on focused on mining stocks and the mining sector in general.

With the wave of volatility hitting the markets, many are looking at gold as a shelter. Some in the outer circles of the gold rush say mining stocks will rise on the coat tails of gold prices. Here are four profiles of companies (large cap and micro cap) that may mine there way to the top, or not.

Newmont Mining Corporation (Newmont) is a gold producer. At December 31, 2010, Newmont had gold reserves of 93.5 million ounces and an aggregate land position of approximately 27,500 square miles (71,100 square kilometers). Newmont is also engaged in the production of copper, principally through its Batu Hijau operation in Indonesia and Boddington operation in Australia. The Company’s operating segments include North America, South America, Asia Pacific and Africa. Its North America segment consists primarily of Nevada in the United States, La Herradura in Mexico and Hope Bay in Canada. Its South America segment consists primarily of Yanacocha and Conga in Peru. Its Asia Pacific segment consists primarily of Boddington in Australia, Batu Hijau in Indonesia and other smaller operations in Australia and New Zealand. Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc. (FCX) is a copper, gold and molybdenum mining company. Its portfolio of assets includes the Grasberg minerals district in Indonesia, mining operations in North and South America, and the Tenke Fungurume (Tenke) minerals district in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The Grasberg minerals district contains a single recoverable copper reserve and a single gold reserve of any mine in the world. It also operates Atlantic Copper, its wholly owned copper smelting and refining unit in Spain. FCX operates seven copper mines in North America: Morenci, Bagdad, Safford, Sierrita and Miami in Arizona, and Tyrone and Chino in New Mexico. It operates four copper mines in South America: Cerro Verde in Peru, and El Abra, Candelaria and Ojos del Salado in Chile. In Indonesia, PT Freeport Indonesia operates the mines in the Grasberg minerals district. In Africa, Tenke Fungurume S.A.R.L. (TFM) operates the Tenke Fungurume (Tenke) mine. Phoenix, AZ

Denison Mines Corp. (Denison) is engaged in uranium exploration, development, mining and milling with uranium mining projects in both the United States and Canada and development projects in Canada, the United States, Zambia and Mongolia. Denison’s assets include an interest in two of the four licensed conventional uranium mills in North America, with its 100% interest of the White Mesa mill in Utah and its 22.5% interest of the McClean Lake mill in Saskatchewan. Denison also produces vanadium as a co-product from some of its mines in Colorado and Utah and recycles uranium-bearing waste materials, referred to as alternate feed materials, for the recovery of uranium, alone or in combination with other metals, at its White Mesa mill. The Company’s 70% interest in the Gurvan Saihan Joint Venture in Mongolia is held through Denison Mines (Mongolia) Ltd, which is wholly owned by Denison Mines (Bermuda) I Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Company.

Texas Rare Earth Resources Corp is a North American based mining company engaged in the exploration and development of mineral properties. Their flagship property, Round Top Mountain in Hudspeth County, Texas, is held under a 20-year renewable lease from the State of Texas to explore and develop a rare earth-uranium-beryllium prospect which includes niobium, tantalum and gallium. Their lease with the State of Texas covers 860 acres and prospecting permits covering an adjacent 9,345 acres.

Texas Rare Earth Resources, Newmont, and Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc. all closed down this past Friday with loses of -2.44%, -1.48%, and -0.92% respectively.
